Sam Bastin commenced his role in Otago Country Cricket Development Officer this week. To get in touch with Sam:
Email: [email protected] Mob: 021 678 552 Sam brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role having served the North Otago District for the last 3 seasons. Sam made a great contribution in the North Otago area, leading change through implementation of age and stage, growing girls pathways in Girls Smash and Yeah Girls, supporting Youth Cricket and modified competitions. Sam is also a qualified coach developer. We look forward to seeing Sam build on the great work that has been done to develop cricket in our district over many years. Welcome to version twenty of our newsletters. We hope they help keep all stakeholders in the Otago Country network up to date with the happenings within our organisation. It’s been a while since our last newsletter and while the season is winding down there has been plenty happening that is worth highlighting. Without a doubt, the biggest news in our district recently has been the recognition of our district association Chairman, Malcolm Jones as New Zealand Cricket Volunteer of the Year. Here is an extract from the program at the New Zealand cricket awards held at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland in March: Known simply as ‘Jonesy’ - Malcolm has been a tireless advocate for cricket in Otago Country. Current chair of the Otago Country Cricket Association, he has led the organisation into a position of strength and was instrumental in bringing first-class cricket back to Alexandra. This feat was achieved following Malcolm’s relentless voluntary work and advocacy for Otago Country. Of course, Jonsey’s efforts are well known across our district, but it was great to see him finally receive the recognition that he so richly deserves. He would like to pass on the following message: “I Just want to thank everyone for their kind comments and 'likes'. Great night and really good to have Nic there beside me. Otago Country is a special place with extremely special people and I'm proud to be involved with you all.” Also, congratulations are in order to all the Otago Cricket Assn. award winners but particularly young Eden Carson from Ranfurly who took out the rising star award. Eden had an outstanding debut season for the Otago Sparks. Due to the large distances between different locations within our district it is not always practical to hold an awards function, but the following representative players have received Otago County awards: Our very popular Development Officer, Willie Miller, left our organisation in early March to pursue a building career in the Maniototo. We thank Willie for all the great work he has done for Otago Country over the last five years and wish him well for his new adventure. Willie leaves some big shoes to fill and we are looking at a replacement in July/August. In the Vincent Competition, Albion beat Queenstown Ballarat to take out the Koford Cup in the Senior competition and Albion reserves made it a double for the Wanaka based club when it took out the Partridge Cup with win over Molyneux CC at Molyneux Park. Thanks again to Peter Sylvester for the great job he has done organising this competition and Malcolm Jones who has put together the weekly reports in the ODT. Also congratulations to the Waihola Swans who have won the South Otago Premier Cricket 40 over competition final again this season. Thanks to Francis Parker for the superb job he has done once again this promoting the South Otago competition. Francis not only spins a great yarn but managed to also be the equal top wicket taker is this competition. Junior cricket in Central wrapped up on March 15 with the final round of club cricket under the new age and stage rules. The following day an Otago Country District tournament called the Buttar-Wilson Super Smash was played at Molyneux Park and the Dunstan High School grounds in Alexandra. The tournament involves players from year 5 to 8. Teams representing South Otago, Vincent-Maniototo, Queenstown and Upper Clutha play two rounds of T20 cricket. The winner of the Wilson Family Trophy was Vincent Maniototo and the Buttar Trophy was won by Queenstown. Congratulations to these teams and special thanks to all the coaches, managers and drivers who volunteered their time for these boys to play some very good cricket. The Len Anderson Cup game was played during the last weekend of March with Omakau handing out a 105 run ‘hiding’ to Valley in the T20 game on Saturday. Len’s had a long career with the Omakau Club from the early 1950s to the late 70s and his sons were captains for the teams which was fitting given that Len had played for Omakau for years and his late brother, Pat, turned out for Valley. Reunion organiser, Stew Burt, said the get together was well attended with approximately 70 people attending events over the weekend. The centenary of the Omakau club which is now under the Black’s Hill banner will be in 2022. At Molyneux Park the pitch renovation has been pushed out to the end of next season which is a sensible outcome and one that will ensure the rebuild is not rushed. It has the support of NZ Cricket, Otago Cricket and ourselves and obviously the council and their new 'green spaces' contractor Delta. Delta take over on July 1st and we look forward to working alongside them. We also extend our thanks to Asplundh and particularly Gary Smith and Guy McCone who kept the ground in great order. Emma Campbell has had another busy time with her involvement as our Summer Development Officer in the Queenstown/Lakes area. Emma is an enthusiast in her role and has a great passion for cricket having played the game at the highest level. We look forward to having Emma involved in the future and wish her all the best for her winter activities. Our Administration Officer, Adrian Morgan, and Willie and Emma have worked hard over the summer to make sure our association has completed our KPI's for the 2018-19 season. The KPI's formed a big part of our Partnership Agreement with NZC and Otago Cricket in so far as funding is concerned. Adrian, Willie and Emma have worked really hard to make sure the Digital (CricHQ), Age and Stage and Coaching KPI's have been achieved in a timely manner. Adrian and the Board have also been working hard to complete the Inclusion and Diversity KPI and we are in the process of completing the Capability one. These will be well completed before the May 31st deadline. Adrian and Emma will be in Auckland over the next two days at the NZC Network and Participation Workshop 2019 learning how the new (2018-19) Partnership Agreements have gone and starting the planning for the coming year. Otago Country Cricket is blessed with some great volunteers and we are so fortunate that they take time out of their increasingly busy lives to coach/manage/mentor and transport our young people to their various cricket activities during the summer season. It is simply a fact of country living that we must travel to play our sport which means early starts most weekends. Our association would like to say thanks to you all because in our eyes you are all superstars. Keep up to date with any news of the association by checking out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Otago-Country-Cricket-Association-133940846657978/ Cheers, Malcolm Jones (Jonesy) Chairman Adrian Morgan Administration Manager A year 7 development team from our district attended a tournament in Timaru last weekend (Jan 18, 19, 20) and had plenty of success. The boys won 3 from 4 matches with plenty of good individual performances. Many thanks to Sandy Wilson for organising and coaching the team and the South Canterbury Association for managing the tournament and providing outstanding facilities for the boys to develop their cricket. The tournament was a great success and we are hoping to include two squads in the tournament next season.

Welcome to version nineteen of our newsletters. I hope they help keep all stakeholders in the Otago Country network up to date with the happenings within our organisation.
Well the season has begun in earnest with plenty happening all around the place with the Crosby Morris done and dusted with Queenstown sneaking in the back door to claim the trophy for the 2018-19 season but probably the story of this seasons competition was Caleb Carson from South Otago who by weight of runs has forced his way into the Hawke Cup team and has been added to the Otago U19 squad. Caleb stuck 74 out of 170 for our lads against a pretty strong Dunedin Metro side in the annual Stewart McKnight Trophy clash at Oturehua. It was a fine knock in fairly bowler friendly conditions. Just a note to let you all know that Stewart recently had an ankle replacement and is in good form if not a little edgy and keen to get back on the bowling green. Really great to see Stewart at Oturehua for some of the game and thanks to Shirley for getting him there. While on the subject of the McKnight family, Ken, at the ripe old age of 54 scored a double century a couple of weeks ago in club cricket over Yadina on the Sunshine Coast. Great effort Ken. An exciting piece of news just received is that from next week on we will have a home at last. The Alexandra Rugby Club has agreed to let us utilise a small area upstairs at Molyneux Park for an office space. This gives us a ‘home’ and a base for Adrian and Willie to carry out their work. This is a huge step forward and I hope it is the start of a whole new relationship with the Alex Club which will benefit both organisations. A huge thanks to the ARFC for agreeing to this. I want to take this opportunity to thank Trail Journeys for hosting Willie over the last 3-4 years and storing some of our gear. We really have appreciated your hospitality and wish you all the very best for the future. Fraser Wilson and Jarred Andrew have the Hawke Cup side well organised and are confident of some good performances this coming season. Jimmy Pyle will lead the side again this season. The team is, James Pyle, Captain and Wicketkeeper Taylor Cumberland Joel Meade Reuben Pyle Cam Jackson Tim McCormick Barry White Kevin Loggenberg Caleb Carson Tom Myles Bailey Andrews-Kennedy Sam Blakely. Unfortunately, their first game against North Otago was abandoned as early as last Thursday due to the extreme amount of rain in the Oamaru area leading into the game and both teams were awarded five points each. This weekend they play current Hawke Cup holders Southland at Molyneux Park followed a fortnight later when they host South Canterbury at the same venue. Their last game in the Zone 4 elimination series will be 12-13 January when they travel to Ashburton to take on Mid Canterbury. Should they end as top qualifiers they will challenge Southland on 1-3 February at Queens Park in Invercargill. I’m sure you will join with us in wishing them all the very best of luck for the season. We’ve got a couple of new sponsors on board this season which is great news. Both FMG https://www.fmg.co.nz/ and House of Travel https://www.houseoftravel.co.nz/hot-stores/otago-southland/alexandra have entered into partnerships with us and we are really pleased to have them on board. We are also pleased to welcome Clare Toia-Bailey and www.image-central.co.nz. Clare is seen regularly at cricket all over our district and we use her photos often on our FB page. So, if you need some insurance or travel or any photography done please use the businesses above. A big thanks also to Liz Perkins at Monteith’s Bar http://www.mbba.co.nz/ in LX. Liz and her team will sponsor the new “ Sixes” to start in the New Year. Liz will also provide a staff member to help set up and organise the comp. We have several funding sources that have supported us this season and I like to thank them greatly for this support, Bendigo Valley Sports and Charity Foundation: www.bendigovalley.co.nz/ NZCT http://www.nzct.org.nz/ The NZ Racing Board https://nzracingboard.co.nz/ The Trusts Community Foundation Ltd. http://www.ttcfltd.org.nz/ Pub Charity http://www.pubcharitylimited.org.nz/ It is just awesome to have these people supporting Otago Country and we ask that wherever possible can you please support them. Congratulations to the following Otago Country representatives who have been selected to represent Otago at age group tournaments: Under 15: Paige Loggenberg, Caitlin Hollyer, Bridget Mullally, Anna Duncan, Caitlin Scherp. Under 18: Kloe Vermeir Under 21: Eden Carson, Georgia Heffernan, Kate Heffernan. Congratulations young ladies and all the best for your respective tournaments. While on the subject of congratulations a special one to Toby Stanton from Queenstown who is the Otago Cricket SBS Bank Coach of the Month! Toby coaches the Division 3 Green team in Queenstown and is so well loved that some of them don't want to move up a grade! A massive thanks to Toby and all the other coaches in our Otago Country community, without you our kids wouldn't be able to get out and play the game we love. https://www.facebook.com/OtagoCricket/photos/a.143309305694783/2878489645510055/?type=3&theater Our administrator Adrian Morgan is a busy man and remains on top of everything in the OCCA.
