Welcome to the sixth of our newsletters. I hope they help keep all stakeholders in the Otago Country network up to date with some of the happenings within our organisation. The cricket season is here with the Boys U17 Tournament completed, the Buttar Trophy finished, Year 7-8 Trial held and club cricket finished their second rounds in both the Vincent and South Otago competitions.
Funding takes a huge amount of time and effort and is vital to the running of any sporting organisation. Cricket is very fortunate to have a parent body, NZC, which provides some serious funding to the Major and District Associations. We also require out-sourced funding through applications to funding agencies. We recently receive a funding grant from the Bendigo Valley Sports and Charity Foundation to assist with the U17 team that travelled to Oamaru, and to them we are extremely grateful. Our two Cricket Development Officers, Willie Miller and Emma Campbell are both busy in their roles with school and club visits, rep trainings and general admin etc. Just a reminder that Willie can be contacted on 0212790979 or email Willie @ otagocricket.co.nz and Emma can be reached on 0211242266 or email emma@coaching-solutions.co.nz (note different email from the last newsletter. Editors mistake sorry) If you have any questions please contact these two or myself. My contact details are below. I’ve had a request from Rhys Chamberlain at the Otago Daily Times looking for any “Backyard Cricket Pitches” in the Otago Country region. He’s doing a feature piece on the best cricket backyards in Otago and is keen to hear of any around. If you have one and are keen to be included, contact me. The U17’s travelled to Oamaru at Labour Weekend and competed in the Otago District Tournament and after a couple of first up losses to Southland and Dunedin Metro, beat North Otago on the last day to finish 3rd. The management team was happy enough with the performance from what was a reasonably young team and reckoned the boys all learnt some valuable lessons. Probably the top performers were batting wise, Issac Steentjes while Daniel Lewis showed some good form with both bat and ball and all-rounder Marc Cormack should be proud of his efforts finishing with the standout performance of the weekend getting 6 wickets against North Otago to seal the win. Caleb Carson showed a fair bit of promise before heading to U15 tournament. The Buttar Trophy was held in Alexandra on the 7th November and both Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 grades were won by the Vincent/Maniototo combined teams. Winning coaches of these teams were Shayne O’Connor (Y5/6) and Steve Cormack (Y7/8). This is an annual competition for the Buttar Trophy which was first presented about eight years ago by the Buttar family who have been huge contributors to all forms of cricket in South Otago, Cromwell, and the wider Otago Country Cricket region. Graeme Buttar is one of the major driving forces behind junior cricket in our association and sits on our OCCA Board. The T20 format is a suitable mix for this popular early season tournament, which is played on two grounds at Molyneux Park and two at Dunstan High School. The Otago Country U15 Girls team named for the District Tournament in Gore this weekend is; Eden Carson (Captain) Ella Rose Lawerence Georgie Jessop Eden Jones Lilly Patterson Paige Loggenberg Kloe Vermeir Paige McIvor Sandra Horrell Rebecca King McKenzie Galbraith Coach: Craig Lawerence Assist Coach: Glen Paterson This group travelled to Gore for a warmup game last Sunday and convincingly beat the Southland side in what was supposed to be a 35 over per side game, but reduced to 20 overs per side. Our girls rolled Southland for 68 then chased down the runs only losing 2 wickets in the process. A great dress rehearsal and good luck for this weekend girls. One of our many volunteers is leaving the district to head back up north to be a bit closer to his extended family. Maurice Fordham is sadly leaving Glenorchy and with that his association with the Queenstown CC and the Otago Country Umpires Assn. Maurice has been fully involved in cricket and cricket umpiring/scoring since arriving in Queenstown 6/7 years ago and he will be missed. We wish him the best for the future. Sadly the proposed Crosby Morris fixture planned for this Sunday between holders Lakes, and the Maniototo team has been cancelled. Maniototo are unable to field a team. The next fixture is Lakes v South Otago on the 20th December at a Lakes venue. The Hawke Cup Squad is due to be named any day now so keep a lookout for it on our Facebook page. They play a two-day warmup versus Southland next weekend 21-22 November at the Events Centre and then get into their keenly awaited Hawke Cup Elimination program against North Otago at Molyneux Park on the 28-29th November. Get out and support these guys if you can. The whole Zone 4 Hawke Cup Elimination series this season is being ‘Live Scored’ and a link to the games will be available on our website. If you can’t make it to the games keep up to date with how the lads are going on your computer/laptop/tablet/phone just as you do with the BLACKCAPS/Volts etc. If you require any help to get onto this link contact me. Don’t forget our new website is up and running. The domain name is www.otagocountrycricket.co.nz. It is a working site so there will be additions ongoing some keep checking to catch the latest info. Also keep an eye on the Otago Country Cricket Association Facebook page for news updates. You will notice the latest FB posts go on the ‘home page’ of the website as well. Welcome to the fifth of our newsletters. I hope they help keep all stakeholders in the Otago Country network up to date with some of the happenings within our organisation. The cricket season is here, well maybe not quite in Otago Country as such, but close!!
Our Cricket Development Officer, Willie Miller, has started full on. He was up in Queenstown and Cromwell a couple of weeks ago assisting Emma Campbell with Holiday Programs and back in Dunedin to help Otago Cricket with their Holiday Programs. Thursday/Friday of last week he had the Combined Otago Country Team playing in the McCullum Cup T20 competition and this week back into school visits. Just a reminder that Willie can be contacted on 0212790979 or email willie@otagocricket.co.nz The Summer Coaching role is signed and sealed and we are thrilled to have Emma Campbell back on board. Emma started officially at the beginning of October but she had already done a heap of planning admin leading into the season. It is great to have someone with Emma’s skills back on board with us and working with our young cricketers throughout the Lakes area of Otago Country. Emma has just tidied up the final stages of our successful Winter Training Program. I have had some great feedback about her work in this area. If you need to contact Emma she can be reached on 0211242266 or email emmamareecampbell@gmail.com As you can imagine there is a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to get the OCCA Rep Programme up and running and I’d like to make special mention of the work Graeme Buttar, Fraser Wilson and Emma Campbell put into organising coaches and managers for our teams. Congratulations to the Milton Cricket Club that is to celebrate their 150th Jubilee over Waitangi weekend, 5-6-7 February 2016. Just a reminder that Molyneux Park has got two Ford Trophy games on the 27th and 30th December with the Otago Volts playing both Auckland and Canterbury while the Otago Sparks host the Central District Hinds on 2-3-4 January. Queenstown’s Events Centre hosts Sri Lanka, when they play their three-day warmup game against the NZC Presidents X1 on 3-5th December. NEWSLETTER No4 13th September 2015 Welcome to the fourth of our newsletters. I hope they help keep all stakeholders in the Otago Country network up to date with some of the happenings within our organisation. The cricket season is approaching fast so things are moving on a bit. Our Cricket Development Officer, Willie Miller, has settled well into his role and has started his school visits with Poolburn School being the first stop on what we hope is a really successful career for Willie within cricket in the Otago Country area. Willie has had a look at a couple of flatting options in Alexandra and is close to finalising one. Some really exciting news for us is that Willie will be based in an office out at Trail Journeys at the Clyde turn-off. The OCCA is extremely grateful to Shayne O’Connor for offering us the opportunity to work out of Trail Journeys’ headquarters. Willie can be contacted on 0212790979 or email willie@otagocricket.co.nz The Summer Coaching role is a whisker away from being finalised with Emma Campbell being named, and we are just working through some minor details before nailing it. Emma is due to start at the beginning of October and is excited at the opportunity. It will be great to have someone with Emma’s skills back on board with us and working with our young cricketers throughout the Lakes area of Otago Country. Emma is going through the final stages of our successful Winter Training Program. She was responsible for getting this up and running and has almost completed this important and valuable role for us for this winter. We have completed and signed our Service Level Agreement with Otago Cricket. Each District has their own specific SLA with Otago Cricket and by signing allows us to receive our funding from NZC via the OCA. Part of the SLA has a ‘metric component’ which means we have ‘tagged funding’ with targets to achieve before we receive the monies. We are already working hard to achieve these targets. Outstanding news in the last couple of weeks with Molyneux Park being awarded a Ford Trophy double-header on the 27th and 30th December with the Otago Volts playing the Auckland Aces and Canterbury at this great venue. The back to back games are a throw back to the halicon days at Molyneux and wouldn’t it be sensational to see a return to those crowds of the past, on the banks there. A ‘Womens Round’ of games will follow the Volts games, between the Otago Sparks and the Central District Hinds on 2-3-4 January. It will be great to welcome back Coach, Warren Lees and the Sparks to MP. It will be interesting to watch our own Caitlin Blakely playing alongside Whiteferns players, Suzie Bates, Morna Nielsen and Leigh Kasperek while they try to copy last years achievements. Although disappointed not to be awarded an ODI this season, the Queenstown Events Centre will host Sri Lanka, when they play their three day warmup game against the NZC Presidents X1 on 3-5th December. They will also host a four-day Plunket Shield game between the Volts and Wellington 5-8th February. Our Hawke Cup Team schedule has been finalised. It starts with a 2-day warmup at the Events Centre against the ‘old foe’, Southland, and very pleasing to see the Stewart McKnight Trophy game back on the schedule at Oturehua. The schedule is; 21-22 November. Warmup v Southland @ Queenstown Events Centre. 28-29 November. v North Otago @ Molyneux Park. 6th December. v Dunedin Metro, Stewart McKnight Trophy @ Oturehua. 12-13 December. v Southland @ Queens Park, Invercargill. 16-17 January. v South Canterbury @ Aorangi Park, Timaru 30-31 January. v Mid Canterbury @ Molyneux Park. It has been agreed by NZC that all Zone 4 Hawke Cup Elimination games this season will be ‘Live Scored’, ball by ball, using the same program, Feedback Cricket-Live Scoring Edition, that provides ‘Live Scoring’ of all International and Domestic cricket on the BLACKCAPS website. This is an exciting development and we thank NZC for agreeing to this. The link to these games will be on our website. Further information on this closer to the time. Early last week we had the excellent news we had again received funding from KiwiSport to continue with our in school program. It is so important we continue to work hard in this area to introduce new players into our sport and this funding from KiwiSport is ensuring our valuable work will continue. We are waiting on the arrival of our gear from Kookaburra for the season ahead, and we thank them for their continued support of Otago Country. Should you have any need for gear/balls etc for the season contact Blair Franklin at Kookaburra on 021961715 and you’ll find him very obliging. Our new website is almost due to be released. The domain name iswww.otagocountrycricket.co.nz. It will be far more user friendly as we strive to get our message and information to all our stakeholders. Our sincere thanks to Mark Wilson of Queenstown for designing the new website. Also keep an eye on the Otago Country Cricket Association Facebook page for news updates. With the arrival of Spring things have ramped up a bit with the finalising of Playing Programs and Funding applications, grounds booked, gear sorted, Service Level Agreements signed, Annual Reports organised and AGM’s planned. Our AGM will be held at 6pm on the 24th September 2015 at the Breen Construction Board Room, Russell Street, Alexandra. All welcome.
